A few days ago, they raised the beautiful Swiss flag on the bell tower of Ligornetto.
They put it up there as a signal to foreign planes that are on the neutral territory of Switzerland.
Because a few days ago they strafed and dropped bombs on the Swiss territory of Chiasso. They said it was a mistake because with all the snow they could not see the Swiss flags.
But since this mistake has been repeated several times it was thought to put the flags on the bell towers and on the important buildings
Therefore, it was also placed on the bell tower of Ligornetto.
When I go to school, I always look at it
It waves in the sky and seems to touch it
From a distance you can clearly see the white cross in the middle of the red
The flag flutters at the slightest blow of wind in the beautiful Helvetian sky.
But even the flags were not enough as a signal to the aviators because they still strafed the soil of our homeland, so then the cannons were placed to strike them.
Da qualche giorno hanno innalzato la bella bandiera Svizzera sul campanile di Ligornetto.
L’hanno messa lassù come segnale agli aeroplani esteri che si trovano sul territorio neutro della Svizzera.
Perché alcuni giorni fa essi hanno mitragliato e sganciato bombe sul territorio Svizzero di Chiasso. Essi dissero che fu uno sbaglio perché con la neve non hanno potuto scorgere le bandiere Svizzere.
Ma poiché questo sbaglio si è replicato parecchie volte si pensò di mettere le bandiere sui campanili e sugli edifici importanti
Dunque fu posta anche sul campanile di Ligornetto.
Quando vengo a scuola io la guardo sempre
Essa sventola nel cielo e pare che lo tocchi
Da lontano si scorge bene la croce bianca in mezzo al rosso
La bandiera sventola nel bel cielo d’Elvezia al minimo soffio di vento.
Ma neppure le bandiere non bastarono come segnale agli aviatori perché essi mitragliarono ancora il suolo della nostra patria ed allora si piazzarono i cannoni per colpirli.
I was sleeping deeply when I heard my mother’s voice calling me because it was time to get up.
I opened my eyes, still sleepy, and a ray of sunlight coming through the slits of the window hit me on my forehead.
I yawned, turned away and started thinking, I don’t know what anymore.
Immersed in those thoughts, I forgot about my mother’s call
When I heard eight bells ringing from the bell tower I was frightened because at a quarter past eight I had to go to school
I got dressed in a hurry
I went to the kitchen and saw that my mother was not there.
I got ready, had breakfast, reviewed the lesson, and ran towards school.
The road, which at the time was usually packed with children and young girls who, singing and arguing among themselves, went to the school, was then almost deserted.
Halfway, I felt a pain in my side, and I had to slow down.
I arrived at school sweaty and tired.
I approached the gate and saw that it was already locked
I looked around and saw no one.
Then I rang the bell
The janitor appeared and said to me: “You’re late, so come with me.”
He opened the gate, took me by the hand and led me in a direction.
He left me alone in front of the Principal.
He stared at me with a stern look and began to scold me for my delay and beaten I listened to his authoritative words.
He seemed to be a judge pronouncing sentence.
He told me that you must be punctual in every action and that punctuality is one of the most beautiful qualities that you must acquire.
At the end of that scolding I headed towards my class and resumed my lessons
When my mother came home, seeing me a bit mortified, she asked me if I had received any bad grades.
I told her what had happened
She also scolded me for not being punctual and the scolding served me as a rule that one must always be punctual.
Dormivo ancora profondamente quando sentii la voce della mamma che mi chiamava perché era l’ora di alzarsi.
Aprii gli occhi ancor sonnolenti e un raggio di sole che entrava dalle fessure della finestra mi colpì in fronte.
Io sbadigliai, mi voltai dall’altra parte e mi misi a pensare, non so più cosa.
Immersa in quei pensieri mi scordai del richiamo della mamma
Quando sentii dal campanile scoccare otto rintocchi mi spaventai perché alle otto e un quarto dovevo recarmi alla scuola
Mi vestii in fretta e furia
Andai in cucina e vidi che la mamma non c’era.
Mi preparai, feci colazione, ripassai la lezione e di corsa mi avviai verso la scuola.
La strada, che di solito a quell’ora era gremita di fanciulli e di fanciulle che, cantando, e discutendo fra loro si recavano alla scuola, era allora quasi deserta.
A metà strada mi venne un dolore al fianco e dovetti rallentare la corsa.
Giunsi alla scuola sudata e stanca.
Mi accostai al cancello e vidi che era già chiuso a chiave
Guardai attorno e non vidi nessuno.
Allora suonai il campanello
Apparve il bidello che mi disse: – Sei in ritardo ed allora vieni con me.
Aperse il cancello, mi prese per una mano e mi condusse in direzione.
Egli se ne andò e mi lasciò sola dinnanzi al Signor Direttore.
Egli fissandomi con sguardo severo cominciò a sgridarmi per il mio ritardo ed io mogia, mogia ascoltavo le sue autorevoli parole.
Sembrava un giudice che pronunziava la sentenza.
Egli mi diceva che bisogna essere puntuali in ogni azione e che la puntualità è una delle belle qualità che bisogna acquistare.
Alla fine di quella sgridata mi dirissi verso la mia classe e ripresi le lezioni
Quando rincasai la mamma, vedendomi un po’ mortificata mi domandò se avessi meritato qualche brutto voto.
Io le raccontai l’accaduto
Anch’ella mi sgridò per non essere stata puntuale e quella sgridata mi servì come regola che bisogna sempre essere puntuali.
